The All Important First Date

Pregnant Octomom Nadya Suleman

Here at the single mothers dating site odd stories often come across our desk, and there are none odder than Octomum – the woman who gave birth to eight children back in January 2009. Octomom is now auctioning herself off to raise money – to buy a house to house all her children.

Remember the astonishing story of Nadya Suleman, the woman who gave birth to 8 babies, which took the total of her brood up to a staggering 14 children?

Well, it would seem the controversial single mother is taking to online dating in a last ditch attempt to make money to provide for her enormous family.

Nadya hit the headlines in January of 2009 when she gave birth to octuplets; they are the second full set of octuplets to be born and alive in the US. The reaction of the public soon turned sour when they learnt that Nadya already had six other children and was unemployed. She used IVF to conceive the children, to which there was a huge uproar as the use of ‘test tube babies’ is widely controversial. Throughout her limelight in the public eye, she continued to deny purposely having the octuplets, and continues to claim she did not expect to be unemployed or to have as many children as she has.

Nadya is now auctioning herself on a dating site; in order to help raise a down payment on a new home. She is looking for $150,000 but has currently only attracted $2,000.

Her profile claims she is ‘full of life’ and ‘very athletic and love to laugh’ – I guess you have to have a sense of humour with that many kids swinging around your ankles!

This would have to be one of her more bizarre ways of making money, in amongst trying out porn and being a stripper. I think that whilst this is all a bit funny, at the same time it is rather sad to be honest. The woman bit off too many children than she could breed, and now she is literally selling herself to keep her head above water.
Due to her need for a massive family, she cannot now have a normal life, she cannot date normally, and she has to auction herself off to the highest bidder.

Another sad part of Nadya’s story is that she was married, but her husband filed for divorce in 2000. In an interview Marco Gutierrez, Nadya’s ex-husband explained the reason for the divorce was due to failed attempts of having children.

After her divorce it would seem is when Nadya started her mission for a family, regardless of having a partner. Well, she has succeeded; but at what cost? In my view, in order to create 14 lives she has in some ways sacrificed her own life.

Keep Safe At All Times

It is never an easy subject to raise, but one of the most important things for single mothers dating online is to keep themselves and their children safe. It’s important to be aware of the dangers without being over cautious to the extent of not dating for fear of the consequences. It’s a case of using common sense to keep safe and being able to recognise some to the signs that will indicate that something is not quite right. Listen to your instincts.

One group to be aware of, when online dating, is that of potential child abusers. These people are extremely rare but it is best to be safe at all times. Single mothers can be a target group for these people who will go through a “grooming” process, which can take months or even years, in an effort to facilitate their own sexual gratification. They will target who they see as vulnerable, such as those with alcohol problems, or single parents.

The grooming process generally starts by grooming the adults surrounding the targeted child. They will undertake activities such as; doing favours, helping without being asked for help, generally being an all-round nice guy. All in an attempt to ingratiate themselves, and gain acceptance and trust within the family and extended family.

Once they have the trust of the family they will then target the most vulnerable child and engage that child in peer like activities, playing football/Barbie’s etc. They will then begin to groom the vulnerable child; playing tickling games, play fighting, snuggling up on the sofa, etc., in order to test and desensitize the child to touching. They may then test the child in keeping secrets by buying presents and presenting as ‘our little secret’ or ‘no need to tell Mummy’ etc.

Of course, there may be very innocent explanations for many of the activities noted above. This is intended only to generally describe some of the activities involved in the process of grooming. It’s as well to be aware of the signs to look for and to be in a position to be able to stop them in in their tracks and keep your children safe, before the real abuse begins.

As said at the beginning, be aware of the potential dangers but don’t let it stop you finding Mr Right. Remember at all times to keep safe.
