Single Parents’ Day takes place each year on March 21st. Simply put, it’s a day that is set aside to honour and applaud the hard work that single parents do each and every day in raising their children.

Single Parents Day may be seen by some cynics as commercial nonsense, and there is no listing for it on Wikipedia, but the idea does have some merit.

Single Parents Day Card

The only one we could find had this rather sweet message which starts “Mum, you truly are an inspiration to my life. I know I’d never be where I am today without your constant love…”

This sounds very similar to what you might find in a Mothers Day card, but hey the sentiment is there.

The idea for Single Parents’ Day began way back in 1984 with an article written by Janice Moglen, an American divorced mother of two, who hoped that Single Parents’ Day might one day gain the recognition we all associate with both Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.

Single Parents’ Day is a day for honouring the single parent who is basically doing double duty and recognising this fact, and giving single mothers and single fathers some respect.

While some may conclude that Single Parents’ Day is merely a convoluted variation of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, it is so much more than that. Single Parents’ Day 2012 is an opportunity for the children of single parent families to recognise the sacrifices their parents make to provide for their needs whilst working to create a happy and stable home environment for the children to thrive. Secondly, it is an opportunity for single parents themselves to celebrate their efforts and achievements.

Some would say that Single Parents’ Day is also an opportunity to raise awareness about the determination and strength shown by the many single parents who are raising children today. While there is tremendous joy in the task, it is also an awful lot to bear all on your own, and it’s time that we applaud the individuals who are up to the task, instead of being negative towards them.

Here at Single Mother Dating, we therefore Support Single Parents Day and applaud all single parents for all they do in raising their children.

Of course not. Being a single parent should not stop you from having fun. Instead of feeling depressed, try to make it a memorable day for you and your children.

First of all, redefine your meaning of V Day and make it special for yourself and your kids. Who says that Valentines Day has to be the Cupid kind of love? You can make it into a special loving event for you and your child by simply doing something fun and creative together.
